Charles Holcomb Obituary

Former Durango resident Charles "Norman" Holcomb died at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009. He was 86.

Mr. Holcomb was born to Charlie L. and Verna Lee Holcomb in Crawford County, Texas, on July 2, 1923.

During World War II, he was a member of the Army Air Corps, serving as a waist gunner in a B-24 bomber in the European Theater. Mr. Holcomb was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant after flying 50 missions.

On July 21, 1946, he married Annabelle Teubel in Tulia, Texas.

The Holcombs moved to Durango in 1958 and lived here for 35 years, until 1993. Mr. Holcomb worked as a measurement inspector for Western Circle Gas Co.

He was a life member of the Durango Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031 and a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 507.

"He was known by his many grandchildren as 'PoPo,'" his family wrote. "He was a lively character who enjoyed the pride of a great family, coffee with good friends and the admiration of all who knew him."

Mr. Holcomb is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annabelle Holcomb, of Farmington; daughter, Susan Nystrom, of Farmington; son, Charles N. Holcomb Jr., of Littleton; sister Sally Smoot of Amarillo, Texas; brother, Eddie Holcomb, of Canyon, Texas; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 28, 2009, at Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Greenlawn Cemetery in Farmington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to cancer research or the charity of one's choice.
