Casey Hockett Obituary

03.11.1986 to 09.22.2023

Casey Hockett passed away on Fri Sept 22, 2023 at 12:15 pm, as he was being sung a 3-part-harmony hymn. He was peacefully surrounded by loved ones at Mercy Hospital, 19 months after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Only 37 years old, he was deeply loved and appreciated by his friends, family and acquaintances, because of his unique sense of humor, his care for others, his kind nature, his strong moral fiber, his creativity and his innate ability to tell a story. Casey had the best laugh and smile. He lit up every room with his positive attitude. He left his love and legacy in his 5-year-old son, and many filmmaking projects (by Hockett Films) to be finished by his wife and close colleagues.

Casey was born in South Bend, IN. He was a 2004 graduate of Manchester High School in N. Manchester, IN. He then attended Vincennes University for film and broadcasting. All his life he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, the outdoors, animals, camping, fishing, hockey (Boston Bruins), movies and music.

Casey loved traveling. He had an interest in all cultures and genuinely wanted to experience new people and places. He was an incredibly spiritual man, feeling very close ties to his Native American heritage. He was selfless. What he wanted most was for everyone else to be okay. During the end of his time here on earth he envisioned the people he loved healing themselves. He took space from his known world towards the end of his life to heal from his own personal trauma. This was the nature of his life: setting an example for others. He healed his mind, heart and spirit, and when it was time to go, he went on his own terms.

In memory of him, Casey would prefer for any tears to be tears of happiness. In honor of Casey, be encouraged in your own personal dreams; make a joke, take a trip, be kind while in action, watch a good film, or make a life-changing decision.

Casey is survived by his wife and son, Elle Carpenter-Hockett and Skyler Carpenter-Hockett, his parents Patty (Mark) Houghton and Bob (Tammy) Hockett; his siblings Kim (David) Pyle, Riley Hockett, Adam Rodriguez, Nichole (Christian) Wargo, Amy (Jeremy) Bucklin, Tracy (AJ) Hurd, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Casey was preceded in death by his grandparents Byron and Janet Hockett and Richard and Betty Lauderback.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sun Oct 29, 2023 from 11 am - 4 pm at Rotary Park in Durango, CO. All are welcome.

Memorial contributions can be made out to Edward Jones (memo: Skyler Carpenter- Hockett) and given to Casey's family to be deposited.

I met Casey years ago when he came to my house as an employee of UltraSteam. I always enjoyed him, he had a wonderful manner about himself. He talked about his wife and his son, especially. He was obviously kind and quite thoughtful. Although it has been several years since he was here, to this day I often think about the perceptive and helpful comments he made as I wondered aloud if I should replace my carpet with wood flooring. Casey immediately grasped the dilemma I'd have choosing which of the different colors of the stained floors any new flooring would match that my carpet touched! And then there is the moulding, he'd said...and I thought he must be an artist. I was so sad when told he had cancer later on by UltraSteam. I had his cell in my phone log from some time he'd called to alert me of their ETA and I left in in my saved numbers to remember to mentally send him prayers whenever I ran across his name. I had wondered how he was doing....although I hardly knew Casey, I know each of you have suffered an irreplaceable, sorrowful, painful loss. I am so sorry for you. Best Blessings, Robin Wiles
