Carl Dutton Obituary

Former Southwest Colorado resident Carl J. Dutton died from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, on Sept. 10, 2014, in Castle Rock. He was 85.

Mr. Dutton was born to Perry Albert "Pat" Dutton and Byrel Bramwell on Feb. 29, 1929, in the Hatcher Boarding House in Pagosa Springs. Both the Duttons and the Bramwells were pioneer families in the area, both homesteading land in Archuleta and Montezuma counties.

After growing up in Pagosa Springs, Mr. Dutton attended college at Old Fort Lewis College Campus in Hesperus. He later passed the Colorado State Board of Engineering and received his professional engineering license. He worked for the Colorado State Highway Department for 34 years, retiring in 1984.

In 1949, Mr. Dutton met Dorothy Mae Caylor of Dolores. The couple married Jan. 10, 1950, in Aztec. They raised four daughters together.

Mr. Dutton was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 2456 in Monte Vista and the Masonic Lodge No. 145 in Dolores.

Mr. Dutton was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Dorothy Dutton, in 1999.

He is survived by his daughters Nanette Chadwick, of Cortez, Sharon McMeen, of Castle Rock, Cindy Egger, of Bloomfield, New Mexico, and Michelle "Mickey" Dutton, of Glendale, Arizona; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in September.

Memorial contributions may be made to MDA/ALS, 720 South Colorado Blvd. No. 380S, Denver, CO 80246, for the ALS/Equipment Inventory Program.
