Brian West Obituary

Brian L. West, retired periodontist with practices in Durango, Farmington, and Denver, died at home on January 7, 2024, in Peoria, Arizona, where he and Nancy West, his wife of 23 years, reside during the winters.

He was released several days earlier from a hospital after combating a systemic infection. As people who know Brian will attest, he was relentlessly restless, and sitting in a hospital was a special kind of torment. He was so happy to be comfortably at home again, watching the sunset over the Twin Buttes Wash with family while the courtyard and hillside beyond lit up with evening lights.

Brian was a Four Corners area native, born in Cortez, Colorado to Twila (Pritchett) and ML West, but the family moved often throughout his childhood to distant corners of the United States as well as to Veracruz, Mexico. That lifestyle encouraged Brian's search for constant stimulation. Although he was often the new kid across many schools, Brian made friends quickly, aided by an irresistible infectious laugh that was one of his loveliest life-long traits. He also had kind eyes, a soft soul and never hesitated to give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He was a unique, humble and generous spirit that will be sorely missed.

His need to always be "doing something" enriched Brian's life in many ways, leading him to take up and excel at divergent interests beyond his professional practice. Among his talents: He was an excellent golfer, a consummate wine collector, a creative glass and jewelry artist, and a fabulous grill master. Brian loved catching crawfish with the kids and feasting on a Louisiana style boil amidst love and laughter. He was an eclectic collector of pinball machines and the occasional but rarely used motorcycle, RV or houseboat. He was a decent handyman around the house, preferring to keep busy doing the work himself rather than hiring it out. He took up fly fishing for a while, probably to keep his dad company (and who also cycled through frequent hobbies). Most of all, Brian loved traveling and experiencing many corners of the globe with Nancy.

Professionally Brian brought a new level of oral care options and treatment to the region. He excelled at his craft, routinely exceeding expectations and developing lasting relationships with his patients. As an avid member and leader among many professional organizations, dental providers around the state sought his guidance and expertise in treating patients. He truly loved interacting with employees, patients and colleagues alike, frequently donating his time and energy for the good of his patients. He retired from professional practice in 2019 to enjoy spending time with his family.

Brian's unexpected departure leaves a big hole in many, many lives. In addition to Nancy, he will be sorely missed by their daughters, Courtney Babcock, Chelsea Hayes, Megan West and Leslie Benson; grandchildren Logan and Chandler Sanborn, Hayden and Ike Butler, Ayden Underwood, and Owen and Taylor Babcock; his sister Rhonda West; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Brian actively supported organizations that support and sustain current and disabled veterans and would appreciate donations in his honor. The family will hold services in Durango summer of 2024.

Today a mutual patient told me of Dr. Brian West passing and I was shocked. He was bigger than life. Through Dr. West I became the RDH I am today. He started with handing me an instrument and stone the first time I met him and said"show me what kind of hygienist you are... I was up for the challenge and put my best edge on it and handed it back. He promptly checked my edge and said well you´re hired." I told him I was just there to observe from Dr. C.Craig Layton ... later I did go to work for Dr. West we traveled to Farmington for Hesperus and listened to auto books and chatted about the themes we had the best talks ever. He was my BOSS and friend. Heaven is a better place with him there Nancy my heart for your loss and rest of your family too

When my husband came home from his dental appointment with the news he had invited his dentist and his wife to join us on our golfing trip to Ireland, I
Said ok, who are they? I soon learned about two very special people who we were lucky enough to share that trip with and share a lifelong friendship with.
Brian was full of fun, humor, warm and a little mischief ! We will miss him so much. Hugs to you Nancy, thanks for being part of our lives!

We send our sincere sympathies to Nancy and all Brian´s family.
We had many years of working together as dental professionals and Dr. West provided specialized care to our wonderful patients. We are happy to know Brian enjoyed many and varied interests after retiring. (We had lost contact in the years since retiring)
May the memories you´ve made remain forever and we pray you´ll feel Gods loving arms round you as you grieve. Steve & Pam Cassida

Dear Nancy, and to Brian´s entire family,
I am so very sorry to hear of Brian´s sudden passing and I send my most sincere sympathies to you all.
I have so many fond memories of our fun times on Lake Powell together, the Bent Shaft Classic and Fletch and I finding you guys in Akumal when we drove from Cancun in that silly multi colored VW bug.
I regret that we lost touch over the years. I am forever grateful for the friendship you both shared when we moved to Durango.
I wish you peace. Know that he will always be with you and he will give you signs when you need him most.

I first met Brian when my regular dentist referred me to him when I needed treatment. This opened a special, long-lastingbrelationship with he and Nancy. We had many great times at their home and houseboat as t Lake Powell, as well as a shared golfing vacation at Hilton Head Island. We will surely miss him.

Brian was an amazing man and family friend. Often times during high school and college, it was like having a second dad - he always had advice for whatever was going on in my life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
