Braulio Montoya Obituary

Durango resident Braulio Montoya died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at his home. He was 81.

Mr. Montoya was born to Leon and Virginia Montoya on Sept. 18, 1932, in Cuba, N.M. He was one of six children and all helped with the family cattle they raised to feed their family. Many family chores kept the children busy during these years, his family said.

Mr. Montoya made it through the eighth grade, then had to give all his time and energy to helping around the home. He moved to Durango in the early 1950s.

In 1953, he married Lusanta Maestas in Durango.

"Braulio was known for his hard work and carpentry skills," according to his family. "Any project that was needed around the house, he was right there to accomplish the task."

Mr. Montoya was an accomplished carpenter and cowboy. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He also enjoyed gathering wood for the winter months.

"He was a good provider for the family and was there to give a helping hand to all who asked," his family said.

Mr. Montoya is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lusanta Montoya of Durango; children Alvie Barela and Ray Montoya, both of Durango, Richard Montoya of Farmington, and Frances Gallegos and Leona Montoya, both of Bloomfield, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

Cremation has occurred. A rosary led by family members will be recited at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, also at Hood. The Rev. Joseph Gallegos will officiate.
