Bill Vega Obituary

Bill Vega was born and raised in New Jersey. After graduating from Princeton, Bill served three years in the Navy. Upon leaving the Navy, Bill joined the research and development department of General Dynamics. In his thirty-year career there he rose through the management and leadership ranks, ending his career as Vice President of Research and Engineering. He took early retirement to move to Durango, Colorado where he began his second career in non-profit leadership and fundraising. Bill was driving force in creating the new space for the Durango Arts Center (it still resides there today) and served as President of its board for many years. He was a prime fundraiser for the Women's Resource Center and the new Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. He was awarded the Colorado Non-Profit Fundraiser of the Year for his efforts in these endeavors. Upon moving to Corrales, he immediately began volunteering for the Corrales Arts Center and several major national and state political campaigns. Bill is survived by his wife, Polly Garner, three daughters, Lynn Membreno (Marc), Lore Hynes (Jim) and Susan Vega, six grandchildren and five great grand children. At his request , there will be no service. A celebration of Bill's life will be held in September. Any donations in his name can be made to the Corrales Arts Center or the Durango Arts Center.

Bill and my dad (David Rowley) were pals from Princeton. Bill helped me get my role in Facilities at General Dynamic back in 1989. He was generous, very smart, and made a big impact on my life. I know my dad, who passed in 2018, felt the same about Bill.

Dear Polly:

I am so sorry for your great loss. It is so very difficult to lose Bill, your amazing life partner.

I so enjoyed working with both of you and the fantastic couple you were together. You were both wonderful, accomplished and I know went on to give back to many organizations in our Durango Community. Surely, we were all blessed with the two of you. I thought of each of you fondly over the years and the incredible duo you were and know you were blessed with such a very pleasant, measured man.

You have my deepest sympathies and will always be in my heart; I always thought the world of you!! Thank you for all you and Bill have done to make this a better world for everyone!!

In Sympathy and Friendship,
Becky Heizer
