Barbara Shore Obituary

Barbara Shore, a 29 year resident of Durango, Colorado, passed away peacefully in her sleep January 30, 2023. She was 92 years old.

Barbara grew up in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and then attended Oberlin College in Ohio, where she graduated with a major in religion and a minor in physical education. She spent her college summers as a camp counselor, and also traveled to Europe with a student group, seeing 10 countries in 10 weeks. After graduating, Barbara moved to San Diego, where she was employed by the Girl Scouts as a District Director. In 1955, Barbara met and married Stuart Shore, who was a Lieutenant JG in the US Navy. They moved to a beach house in Del Mar, a small city just north of San Diego, where they raised their four kids, Mike, K.C., Nancy and Robert (Chip). Barbara was very active in the community, working for the Red Cross teaching swim lessons, acting as a Girl Scout group leader, volunteering at the National Charity League, and as a deacon, and then elder at Torrey Pines Christian Church. Barbara did all of this while welcoming numerous families to the beach every Sunday, and hosting weekly Wednesday evening potlucks. With her mom Elizabeth, Barbara also formed the "Mother's Club" with a group of Mexican American women in nearby Solana Beach, which she helped fun for 27 years.

When her youngest started junior high, Barbara found a part-time job in the entry department at the Del Mar Fair, and then worked as a sales person and buyer for the Two Bees, a women's clothing store. After Stuart and Barbara retired in the early 90's, they pulled up stakes from their beach home and moved to Durango, Colorado, and built a house overlooking the Animas River, 13 miles north of town. They traveled, skied for several years, played golf, and were active in several bridge clubs and organizations. Barbara also volunteered at the Women's Resource Center from 1996 until 2022. She was also very active in the Durango Club.

In 2009, Barb and Stu sold their house and moved next to Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango, and after Stu died in 2012, Barbara bought a house in Dalton Ranch. She remained very active in her community and with friends until her passing.

She is survived by her children, Stuart "Mike" Shore of Rosenburg, OR; Katherine "KC" Medina of Encinitas, CA; Nancy Shore Whitson of Durango, CO; Robert "Chip" Shore of Copenhagen; and 7 grandchildren.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Stuart Shore.

Contributions in honor of Barbara can be made to the Women's Resource Center of Durango and/or the Durango Club.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.

A very very important part of my 1970, 80's life, meeting Barbara, and family in Del Mar. Barbara organized Christmas caroling with my ocean lifeguards, singing to the beach front residents for a number of holidays.
