Barbara McManus Obituary

Barbara "Bobbie" Becklenberg McManus passed peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2015, at the age of 75. Bobbie was the wife of the late Francis C. McManus.

Bobbie was born December 26, 1939 to Fred and Dorothy Becklenberg in Chicago, Illinois.

Bobbie graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque Iowa, with a degree in Theater. She also earned her Masters degree in Theatre from St. Louis University.

Bobbie and Fran were married on October 20th, 1962, and settled in Chicago, where they began their family. In 1970, Bobbie, Fran, and children moved to Durango. Bobbie and Fran were the managing partners of the Durango Inn Motel and Restaurant. Bobbie was known for her charismatic personality and management style. With a dance floor and six children, the family theater group named, "The Durango Kids," was created and performed for ten years until the motel was sold. These years were some of Bobbie's most treasured, putting two of her greatest loves together, her passion for her family and her passion for theater.

In 1989 Fran and Bobbie opened Durango's first Subway franchise. For twenty three years, they created a welcoming family atmosphere at the restaurant. She sold the business in 2012.

Bobbie is preceded in death by her husband and true love, Francis C. McManus, her favorite son, Daniel D. McManus, brothers Fred Becklenberg, Jr. and Paul Becklenberg. She is survived by sons, Francis X. McManus and Patrick P. McManus of Durango and Michael McManus of Golden, Colorado; daughters Mary "Mayme" McManus of Lakewood, Colorado, and Kathleen McManus of Durango; sisters Marianne Franz of Illinois, Dolly Moser of Oregon, Marie Biagi of Kentucky; brothers John Becklenberg of Indiana, Marty Becklenberg of Chicago; six granddaughters and one grandson.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 17, 11:00, at St. Columba Catholic Church.

A rosary will be said at St. Columba, Monday, February 16, at 6:00 p.m.

I extend my sincere sympathy to your family in the loss of your dear mother. During the years Fran and Bobbie operated The Durango Inn my husband and I spent many nights dancing to the music of Rose Scobie, Ernie Kemm, Clay Kyle and being entertained by "The Durango Kids". Among my souvenirs is a program with photo of your family. Although I am saddened by your mother's passing, it brings pleasant memories shared with Bobbie and Fran. Your family can take great pride in the contributions your parents made to this community. May they both rest in peace.

To the McManus family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy, I knew both of your parents well and not too long ago ran into your mom at the grocery store. I worked at the Durango Inn when I went to Fort Lewis College, and your parents were very good to me. I hope you gain some measure of solace knowing your family did so much for this community and your families memory will live on through the history of Durango. Your mom was a special person and I hope your memories of her will live on in your hearts. Again, sending my condolences and prayers.
