Arthur Denny Obituary

Longtime Cortez resident, World War II veteran, Denny Lake Park namesake and former state

senator Arthur Wayne Denny died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at his home. He was 101. Known to friends as “Wayne," Mr.

Denny was born June 3, 1908, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Paul Arthur and Grace Leona (Palmer) Denny.

He married Viola Randles on Dec. 26, 1977, in Las Vegas.

He served as a lieutenant in the Army during World War II, handling radio communications for Gen. Patton, and was a

longtime member of the Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Mr. Denny served in the Colorado Senate in the late 1960s, heading the Senate Water Committee in 1969. He later served

one term as Montezuma County assessor in the 1970s.

The land Cortez used to build Denny Lake Park was donated to the city by Mr. Denny. Mr. Denny loved to bowl. He

started bowling in 1975 and became a member of the American Bowling Congress. He bowled into his late 90s.

His family remembered him as kind and adventurous.

“He took us places we never would have gone," said stepdaughter Arlene Allen. “He was a prankster; he used to put rocks

in our sleeping bags. He loved to tease."

Surviving him are his wife, Viola Denny of Cortez; daughter, Patricia Pierce of Cortez; 17 grandchildren; and 14

greatgrandchildren. Mr. Denny also leaves behind his stepchildren Arlene Allen of Cortez, Lorene Mead of Cortez,

Claudean Boatman of Windsor, Judy Lange of New Fairfield, Conn., Ellen Koller of Cortez, Ed Tevault of

Cortez, Robert Tevault of Waddell, Ariz., Richard Tevault of Mesa, Ariz., and Larry Tevault of

Cortez; and his siblings, Willard Denny of Salinas, Calif., Lawson Denny of Elgin, Ore., and Shirley Hunt of Layton,

Calif.

He was preceded in death by grandson Rick Pierce.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will be afterward at

Cortez Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by Ute Mountain American Legion Post No. 75.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Denny's name to the Ute Mountain American Legion Post No. 75 or Hospice of

Montezuma, P.O. Box 740, Cortez, CO 81321.
