Ariel Moody Obituary

The light shone a little dimmer on September 2, 2023, when Ariel Ledlie Moody passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. She was 75.

While raised in Darien, Connecticut, Ariel's heart and soul belonged to Durango, Colorado, where she grew a chosen family over the last several decades. There, Ariel enjoyed playing golf (man was she good), hiking the beautiful Colorado trails, swimming in any body of water she could find, practicing yoga and pilates and tending to her beloved garden. San Carlos, Mexico also held a piece of Ariel's heart where she would enjoy one of her favorite pastimes, walking on the beach, barefoot, of course. Music of all genres, styles and tempos was embedded in Ariel's soul. She was an enviable singer, songwriter and guitar player, a pastime she shared with those whom she loved. She continued to listen to and sing all of her favorite songs up until her final day.

Ariel was blessed with beautiful and lasting friendships and she loved her family fiercely. She embodied a true appreciation for the gifts her life gave her. Her strong sense of spirituality allowed her to exhibit profound gratitude, patience, humor and compassion even on her most difficult days. Ariel's kindness, generosity and ability to forgive are just a few of the amazing traits that align with who she was at her core.

In the past few weeks, Ariel was flooded with messages, songs, and cards from her many loved ones. Ariel was recently asked, "Do you feel the love surrounding you?" To which she responded, as only she would, "Totally."

Ariel will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Her final wishes were to have her friends and family gather together so they can feel her unconditional love, and of course, listen to good music. A memorial celebration has been planned for October 7 at the Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango, Colorado.

I’d like to add to my tribute from yesterday, when I discovered this sad news. I had twin daughters in 1987, and one of them is named Ariel. So sorry we had lost touch and she never knew that. ❤

Ariel and I met at the American School in Switzerland and became close and great friends. Her zest for life and her humor were contagious, and I´m beyond grief stricken to know of her passing. I recently tried to reach her, after many years, and when she didn´t respond, I started to have an aching feeling, because it would have been so out of character for her. Tonight, as I was thinking about her, I began to fear that she was no longer with us, and I found her name online and was led to this website. The expression on her face in the photo of her obituary was so full of life and an exuberance that was contagious. That was the Ariel I´ll always remember... her joy and her myriad friends. I scrolled down when I could and found two other alumni from TASIS, and wouldn´t have been surprised if there were many more tributes. Rest in peace, dear friend...I´m sorry we lost touch after all these years. You will not be forgotten.

Just learned of Ariel's passing. Her photo appears on the "Ofrenda," a shrine for Dia de los Muertos, at La Calaca, a San Carlos, Sonora restaurant. She and pal, Katie Noonan, were acquaintances from the early days of the long gone Marina Cantina. Whenever I saw Ariel on the golf course here, it was with a sense of awe. She never used a cart, played at almost a dead run on the hottest days. I invariably let her play through! Always seemed playful, with a twinkle in her eye.

Such fond memories of 1966-67 in Lugano and Europe at TASIS with Ariel, and all the rest of our youthful, lively gang. Spirited and courageous, Ariel lived life to the fullest. Her passing now gives more urgency to Carpe Diem. Condolences to her siblings, nieces, nephews and cousins Ruth and David.
