Anthony Tobias Obituary

Ignacio resident Anthony Pinnecoose Tobias died at his home on Monday, July 20, 2009. He was 75.

Mr. Tobias was born to Albert Tobias and Josie Pinnecoose at Taylor Hospital in Ignacio on Jan. 22, 1934. He was an enrolled member in the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.

He attended school through the seventh grade, when Mr. Tobias' parents returned to Randlett, Utah, where he worked as a laborer. He worked with the Cattleman's Association and was a driver for his Uncle Joe Jenkins.

They returned to Ignacio, where Mr. Tobias met and married Nancey Weaver of Ignacio on March 24, 1960. They had three daughters and one son.

Mr. Tobias worked for the Southern Ute Wood Yard and the Southern Ute Ground Maintenance until he retired.

Mr. Tobias enjoyed going to parades, pow-wows, the Bear Dance and Sundance and flea markets. Mr. Tobias enjoyed spending time with his daughters and attending picnics and family gatherings. He enjoyed watching wrestling and live boxing at the Sky Ute Casino.

In 2001, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and since then had developed other cancers. His family said he was determined to live one day at a time.

Mr. Tobias was preceded in death by his wife, Nancey Tobias; and son, Anthony Pinnecoose Tobias Jr.

He is survived by his daughters Corina A. Tobias, Roberta A.T. Scott and Lida S.T. Allen, all of Ignacio; sister Kathleen T. Hatch of Ignacio; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2009, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio. A wake will be held at his home from 9 p.m. Friday until sunrise Saturday, July 25, 2009. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at St. Ignatius. Burial will be held after at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio.
