Horvath, Janos "John"

May 26, 1933 - May 22, 2025

Age 91 of Hamburg. Passed away under Hospice Comfort Care at Mercy Hospital. He was born in Hungary. His family suffered a great deal under communism. He escaped during the Hungarian revolution in 1956 and worked for a while as an electrician in a cinema in Vienna, Austria. He had hoped to return to Hungary, to his job in the electrical plant (ÉDÁSZ/Gy?r) where he had several inventions and innovations in the field of transformers. John immigrated to America under his uncle's sponsorship. He got a job at Bethlehem Steel as a crane operator, where he worked until his retirement. He was a lifelong soccer enthusiast and fan. He played in his youth both in Hungary and Buffalo, coached the Young Hungarians team, and later became a referee. John was a great problem solver. Helped everyone with various projects, even if it was outside his field. He was the right hand of the Piarist priests, fixed everything, and resolved every problem in and around the church. He received the Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker in recognition of outstanding meritorious service rendered to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary by Bishop Edward Kmiec. Beloved husband of Elizabeth (Kovari) Horvath, of Hungary. Dearest father Victoria (Ferenc) Horvath of Budapest Hungary; son John M. (Angela) Horvath of Rochester. Cherished grandfather of Isabelle, Mathias, and Julius. Visitation: Thursday, 5/29, 3 to 7 pm at the Colonial Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 3003 South Park Ave., Lackawanna. Funeral Mass: Friday, 5/30, 12 pm at St Jude Center, 760 Ellicott St. (Corner of Carlton) Buffalo, 14203. Internment: Lakeside Cemetery, Camp Rd., Hamburg. Flowers gratefully declined.
