Josefita Herrera passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Mercy Hospice House, surrounded by family. She was 106 years old.

Josefita was born June 14, 1914, to Ramundo and Adelina Utemia (Martinez) Trujillo in Chimayo, New Mexico. In her youth, the family moved to Durango. At a young age, she began working outside of her home to help her parents with expenses. In 1948 she married Joe Herrera and they moved to a farm in Ignacio, Colorado.

Though she and Joe never had any children, she loved her extended family - nieces and nephews - like they were her own. She enjoyed dancing at the Grange Hall, sewing, quilting, cooking, traveling with Joe, and her church family. She spread joy through the neighborhood with her cooking and company. Once when asked her advice for a long life, she said, "Keep working hard. And be happy"

She is survived by her sister: Mary Chavez of Farmington; and numerous nephews and nieces including her caretaker, Carmella.

She is preceded by her husband, Joe; parents; siblings: George, Gregorio, Merced, Eliza, Raymundo, Benita and Mary; great-nephew: Moises Dominguez.

It was such a pleasure to know Prima Josie. She was a regular visitor to my moms house and they would laugh and reminisce about the old days. Heaven’s gained another angel!

My sweet Prima Josie was quite a lively lady! She could remember and cook and bake from memory. Everything she made and served was delicious.
She remembered all of her relatives/friends and where they lived and came from.
She welcomed friends, relatives and friends- of- friends with a cheerful heart and a winning smile.
My time with her was precious, and she will remain in my heart and mind forever.
Rest in Peace and continue to smile for all of the angels. Love you, Gloria

Prima (Cousin) Josie shared her love and happiness. She enjoyed a good laugh, and could be a prankster. She was very generous and enjoyed feeding any visitor her cooked potatoes with meat, onions, and green chili. Millionaire Pie and a pot of coffee were generally available, too. Our loss is heaven's gain.

This lady was beyond amazing. I remember once when I asked what her secret to long healthy life was, she said she’d never eaten any processed food. Always fresh home-cooked food. We could all learn from her.
