Caroline Shryock Obituary

Caroline (Craig) Shryock passed away peacefully on May 20, 2020 surrounded by family, shortly after returning to the property where she was born 99 years before. Born September 21, 1920 on the Craig Ranch on Florida Mesa near Durango, she always told of fun times growing up on the ranch.

After graduating from Durango High School Caroline attended Fort Lewis College before joining the U.S. Navy during WW II where she trained pilots to fly by instruments. After her military service she married Louis Shryock. They settled in Kirtland NM where she enjoyed tending her vegetable garden during the summer and was a passionate fan of the Kirtland NM High School girls basketball and volleyball teams and would always attend games with her friend Irene Begay. She was an avid bird watcher and a member of the Four Corners Bird Club. She enjoyed outings with the group and her birding friends John & Jan Reese. For over 50 years Caroline served the Chaparral Girl Scout troop as a leader and trainer. She was given the nickname "Swan" by the troop's girls.

Caroline is preceded in death by her husband Louis Shryock, father Phillip Craig, mother Anna Craig, sister Dorothy McCormick, and brothers William Craig, Perry Craig, Roy Craig and nephew Marvin Voss.

Aunt Carol is survived by numerous nieces and nephews who loved a home cooked meal and hearing exciting stories of a long and eventful life as well as her loving caregivers of over 3 years, Dinah Paul and Faith Gilmore.

A celebration of life will be held later this year. Donations may be made to the Farmington Regional Animal Shelter, 133 Browning Parkway, Farmington NM 87401.

Not sure what to say?

What warm, good memories. Feeding Skinny Tail at the cabin in the 1960s. Crawling through the smallest passage in Mesa Verde when she was in her 80s. Im glad I drove a day off course on my last trip across country to visit a couple of years ago, even though it was a short visit. Carol will be missed. Maybe she and Louie will take one last Jeep trip with my folks in the land beyond, reminiscing about WWII, Girl Scouts, gardening, and all the other things they had in common. My deepest condolences to her family. (Please let me know if there will be a memorial service.)

I have many wonderful memories of Carol and her husband Louie and the times we spent together. Carol and Louie were special and good persons in my life. I went bird watching with Carol and I enjoyed this very much. I have a special place in my heart for Carol. I also have good memories of all the Peretti brothers who were her nephews. Carol will be very much missed by me.

She has always been my favorite aunt. She selflessly gave her time and energy to me as a child when she really didnt have to. Im forever in her debt for showing me the right way to live through her example. Little did I know that she started my career as a fishery biologist when she took me to Mill Creek to catch my first fish when I was about 5. She even showed me how to make my own fishing pole. I especially will miss calling her to tell her all about the birds I see and to reminisce about old times. She will live in my memory forever.

Many, many memories of Girl Scout camping trainings with Carol on La Boca Ranch. The best BBQ roast in a hay hole, Frog in a Hole on a buddy burner, Jungle breakfasts, spice cakes in a hollowed out orange... Lovely memories. I saw a quote this week, "Never underestimate an older person with scouting skills." Carol and other Girl Scout volunteers are shapers of lives, not "just" a leader. You are my Green Angel. Go well and safely.

Carol was a wonderful person for what time I knew her. I met her life-guarding at the Kirtland pool. I admired her for always taking the stairs and using the ladders instead of the ramp/elevator at the pool and told her she must have come from a strong working family. We got to talking and found out she grew up knowing my grandmother Joan Pedwell. They had both grown up in ranching families on the Florida mesa. My grandmother had gone to school in Durango as well. My grandma is 95 now and she still remembered the family and Carol and will be sorry to hear of her passing. Carol and I also shared a love for animal (cats especially). My heartfelt condolences to the family. She truly was loved and will be missed.

Aunt Carol was an amazing person. She was loved by everyone she came across. The Shryock family, Leeper family, and Peretti family will deeply miss her. I remember when I was a kid visiting her house thinking it was like a fairy garden, and she taught me how to make cookies and how to bird watch. Miss you so much Aunt Carol.

Carol will be missed as a mentor for all women. She inspired girls and leaders alike through Girl Scouting, and her hard work.
