Ms. Jan Ferguson (Scheve), born to Edward and Hilda Scheve in Beatrice, Nebraska in 1938, passed away unexpectedly on September 24th, 2018. Her sisters are Marge (Harper) and Judy (Kahle). Her family; Bob Ferguson (deceased), Kim (Dan, Ian,and Lea Osby), Krista (Robert, Taylor and Austin Gooch), and Mike Ferguson lived in Durango beginning in 1973.
She taught English and Physical Education, and was the Varsity volleyball coach in Ignacio (they took 3rd in state!) for 11 years before moving to warmer weather. Some of her carpool buddies (Richard, Liz, and more), were subjects of many smiles, laughs, and love. She earned her Masters Degree in Counseling in 1995.
Other than her children, grandchildren, family and friends, her most recent passion was her volunteer work at the Phoenix Zoo. She spent most of her time in the orangutan exhibit and spent countless hours with zoo projects, as well as welcoming and educating countless visitors.
Jan, Mom, Ferg, Grammy, was the most loving, giving, selfless woman. She brought compassion, empathy, humor and light to all she encountered. She is incredibly missed by all that knew and love her.
A celebration of her incredible life will be held at the Phoenix Zoo at a later date. Donations may be made in her name to the Phoenix Zoo.

I think of Jan so often, especially when I go to Queen Creek, AZ each October - April. She had such a fun spirit and happy heart. I miss her stories about her kids and the grandkids. She loved them all. Heaven has to be a better place with Jan there.

My deepest condolences to Jan's family. She was a wonderful friend for the past 9 years. My husband, Bill, was a first cousin to Jan and they grew up across the road from each other in Beatrice. I admired her from the first time we met. We loved talking about our kids and experiences Bill and Jan had together as children, especially the stories of her teasing Bill about "the bull was going to get him." She was a devoted Mother and friend. I'll miss her greatly. May God bless her children and grandchildren that she adored so much. The "Celebration of Life" service was perfect in every way.

I taught with Jan for several years in Ignacio. We traveled many miles together on buses to get to the volleyball games. I was the cheerleader sponsor.

I don't know how I would have made it through high school without the caring and coaching from this wonderful woman, I remember the time I was caught in a volleyball game with bobby pins in my hair, and she smacked me and on the head and justifiably so. Our whole team and PE classes thought she was amazing. What's even more amazing is I thought of her just a few days ago and wondered how she was doing, as I have many times. Rest In Peace Ferg, we love you and will always miss you and hold youndear to our hearts❤❤ You were a blessing for me and I will always be grateful.
