John Scott, Jr. Obituary

John William Scott Jr., of Granger, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday, March 17, 2022.

John was born December 3, 1928 in Temple, Texas to John William Sr. and Mary (Stephenson) Scott.  John was raised in Granger and graduated from Granger High School in 1946 and attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he was captain of the Baylor swim team.  During his time at Baylor he told a group of girls that the first girl to jump into his car, he would marry.  Nancy quickly jumped into his car and the rest is history.

On June 25,1948 he married the love of his life, Nancy Gardner, in San Antonio, Texas.  From that union two daughters were born, Sally and Susan.  He was a dedicated, life-long farming pioneer of cotton, corn and wheat in the Blacklands of Central Texas.

He served on the City Council of Granger, fought for farmers in the march to DC in 1978, a Board member of the NRCS Soil Conservation district and Blackland Coop Gin Board member.  His hobbies included telling stories, Sunday lunches, making oxygenated water, eating hot sauce by the spoonful, a passion for riding motorcycles with his dad “Papa”, and many road trips with Nancy to Branson, MO and the Texas Gulf coast to eat shrimp.  Having been chosen as a man of “good report, full of the Spirit and of wisdom,” and capable of using the office well, John was set apart publicly and was ordained to the office and work as a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Granger, Texas on October 18, 1959 and held that title until his death.  In his retired years, he enjoyed “supervising” the farm production from the road sitting in his silver Kia Soul.  Above all, he treasured his family, his friends, and the Lord.

John is predeceased by his parents, John & Mary Scott Sr.; sister, Fannie Louise (Howard) Tapper; and nephew, Andrew Scott Howard.

John is survived by his wife of 73 years, Nancy Scott; daughters, Sally (Mike) Hajda of Granger, TX and Susan (David) Oliver of Arlington, TX; grandchildren, Michael (Danielle) Hajda of Granger, TX, Jennifer Shields (Thomas Morgan) of Lawrence, NJ, Sarah (Harrison) Druesedow of Granger, TX and Matthew (Kody) Hajda of Granger, TX; great-grandchildren, Zyton Hajda, Sydney Payne, Maize Hajda, Maelynn Hajda and Nixon Hajda; nephews and nieces, Scott (Bridget) Howard and Elizabeth (Steve) Crowell of Houston, TX, Marietta (Jimmy) King of Greenville, SC, Jim (Sherry) McCann of San Antonio, TX and Nancy (Jack) Shirley of Nacogdoches, TX; and cousin, Juana Bishop of Wimberly, TX.

Mrs. Scott, I once bought a car from you and Mr. Scott, but I got so much more than a car! You two gave me the added gift of friendship! Every time I saw you both out and about, you took time to visit with me, and I loved that. Mr. Scott was always a gentleman and you, always kind. Please know I’ve been thinking of and praying for you and your family.

John was a very special person. I never saw him that he didn't have a smile to share. I always asked him if he had been behaving & his answer was always no & a laugh. I will miss him so much. He was such a kind person.

I got to know John when I was a Farm Bureau agent. You could not have asked for a better client, and wow, what a farmer he was. Such a nice man that surely will be missed by many. Grandpa Scott was a special person. We remember visiting with him and Nancy at family gatherings. Always had a smile of welcome for us. While riding around the Granger with Kody and Matt we would see him parked on the side of the road are in the fields watching the family farming taking place. Love to all of you.

Dear Nancy & family,
We were saddened to hear the news of John's passing. Thinking of you, Nancy, brings back memories of the Tuesday Study Club; you & my Mom were long-time members along with Granger women leaders ... John's Mother, Mary, Louise Spacek, Ella Hill, Loretta Skovran, Norma Cavanaugh, & on and on:) What great role models we had! John often visited with my Dad, Joe Pekar, at the Granger Post Office. Let wonderful hometown & family memories fill your mind, warm your heart, & lead you through this difficult time. Know that we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
