Ernest Vaught Obituary

Ernest “Ernie” Vaught of Crawfordsville, 92, passed away on August 22 surrounded by his family. Ernest was an inspirational example of love, loyalty, patience, forgiveness and deep commitment to his wife, children and many relatives and friends he met throughout his life.

Born Oct. 21, 1928 in New Market, Ernest was the 10th of 14 boys born to Wallace and Wilma Vaught. He shared great memories of his tight bond as a band of Vaught brothers. After graduating from Crawfordsville High School, Ernest joined the Army. As a paratrooper, he enjoyed jumping out of planes with the 187th Airborne and served with Distinction in Korea. In 1997, Ernest retired from 41 years at Raybestos. He retired after 25 years as a Major in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 72 and the Elks. He enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, working in his yard, and watching the Cubs and IU sports.

Ernest married Myrna Myers on Oct. 19, 1963. They shared a deep love spanning over 57 years. Surviving family includes his wife, Myrna; children, Vicki Sering King (Jim), Brad (Lisa), Julie Tomlinson (Wade), Susan Kirkland (Greg); brother, Edwin “Doc” Vaught; grandchildren, Kaitlin (KK), Daniel, Corrie, Faith, Samuel, Josie, Drew, and Kassie; great-grandchildren, James (age 2, who enjoyed doing push-ups with Papaw Ernie), Elena and Valentina.

Visitation will begin at First United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 28th at 10AM, with services at 11:30AM.  Burial with military rites will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery North.

My heart is aching for you, Myrna, and your children. I remember Ernie's pleasant smile and tolerance with "the girls", as we converged on his hospitality! I am so sorry for your loss. We send love to you, Myrna, and to the whole family. Remember his smile, then smile at each other. Don and I pray you will feel the Lord's comfort, and know HIS peace as you go on with your lives.

My sympathy, Myrna. Life gives us its greatest blessing when we find our soul mate. I know you will miss him. Prayers for comfort and strength.

Just now learned of Uncle Ernie's passing. We loved him so very much! He was a great human being, a better Uncle, and a wonderful brother to our father. May he join the family in rest and in peace in living with our Lord forevermore! God bless Aunt Myrna and our cousins and their loved ones.
Our prayers shall remain with you.
