Verlena Collentine Obituary
Verlena Collentine, 70 of Durango passed away of ovarian cancer on Wednesday, August 16, 2017. Verlena Collentine was born Verlena Yvonne McGee in April of 1947. She grew up and lived in the Midwest. Verlena had 3 children, Janna, David, and Tyler. She had 5 grandchildren, Julia, Nathan, Xander, Nova, and Opal who Verlena loved and enjoyed spending time with.

Verlena really found herself and her home when she met Marv Collentine and they moved to Durango in 1998. She loved the town, the activities, and especially the people. Many of whom she got to know and considered friends. Verlena enjoyed reading, knitting, shopping, traveling, dancing, and most of all spending time with her family and friends. Verlena worked with Compassion and Choices to see the Colorado Death with Dignity Law pass.

Verlena had never felt such love and support as she did since her diagnosis in October 2014. Verlena wanted to thank all of those who went to chemotherapy appointments, spent time with her, made her a meal, or sent a card. Your time, care, thoughts, and prayers meant so much to her. She also was so appreciative of the wonderful care she received from Dr. Karen Finkelstein of Southwest Gynecologic Oncology and Dr. Lauren Loftis of LaPlata Family Medicine. Verlena was so grateful to live the past 3 years and described it as "a wondrous journey". Her family would also like to thank all of her caregivers, especially Nancy Burpee, who kept us all informed and was with her at her death. This is truly an amazing community.

Per Verlena's wishes, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Ovarian Cancer Research, Children's Cancer Research, or Hospice of Mercy.
