Mary Theresa Tella Obituary
Mary Tella passed away quietly at her home on December 1, 2017, at the age of 94. Mary was born in Walsenburg, Colorado to Frank and Katil Yekovich who were immigrants from Austria. Her family moved to Canon City where Mary graduated from high school in 1940 and started work at J.C. Penney's. She married Tom Tella in 1947 and was mother to two sons Tom and Joe. In 1953, Mary and her family moved to Durango and her husband started Tella's Standard Service. Mary was very active in Durango with her book keeping for the family business and instrumental in starting up the Four Corners Sheltered Workshop for handicapped and retarded children in Durango, Cortez, Ignacio and Pagosa Springs. In 1980, Mary was named volunteer of the year by the Colorado Association for Retarded Citizens and she served several years as a board member for the Southwest Community Centered Board and the Association for Retarded Citizens. She was also a volunteer instructor for the College for Living Bowling Class and the Special Olympics Bowling Team. Mary was a survivor of breast and colon cancer and counselled other women dealing the similar experiences. Mary also had a strong faith being a devout Catholic all her life and a member of St Columba for over 60 years. Mary enjoyed traveling, sports of all kinds and excelled in bowling and was a member of the 1963 Colorado Woman's Bowling Championship Team.

Mary was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She was always the one preparing the big Italian meals for the family get-togethers and making sure everyone in the family was cared for. Mary is survived by her husband Tom of seventy years, her eldest son Tom (Charly) of Plano, TX, her grandchildren, Amber (Dan) Cox of Durango, Samantha Tella of New York, NY, and Chad Tella (Lauren) of Honolulu, HI, and her great granddaughter Danika Cox. She was preceded in death by her son Joe, her parents, brother, Frank and sister, Catherine.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 10AM at St Columba Catholic Church, 1800 E. 2nd Ave., Durango. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 8, 2017 from 4pm-6pm at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 E. 3rd Ave., Durango.
