Lyle Raymond Short of Durango passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at home on August 23, 2015. He was 84.
Lyle was born in Durango, Colorado, to W. Alva and Belle Constance Short. He grew up in La Plata County. Lyle graduated from Durango High School in 1948. Lyle enlisted in the Colorado National Guard and volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Army after which he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL. Lyle was assigned as a military contractor in England for the U.S. Air Force and it was there, that he met and married Jill in 1959. Upon his return, he continued to work in New York, California, and Denver as an electronics technician. The family returned to La Plata County to ranch, however his time as a military contractor was not complete as he was requested to work on the N.O.R.A.D. project in Colorado Springs for a time of 12 weeks.
Lyle returned to ranching and also worked for the Florida Canal and Enlargement Company as a ditch rider. Lyle took part in the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service as board member, among other agricultural related commissions.
Lyle was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an avid hunter. He developed and managed the Old Homestead Trailer Park, in the Sunnyside area, all while ranching. His favorite ranch tool and hobby was his backhoe and he envisioned returning home to finish a final project in the Trailer Park. Lyle was well traveled and enjoyed seeing the world, including a cruise around the Horn of South America.
Lyle is survived by: his loving wife, Jill; his sons: Mark (Sue) and Dale (Niky) Short; grandchildren: Mark (Kristen) Jr., Craig, Adam, and Braeden Short; great-grandchildren: Tenley and Taryn Short; a special niece: Karen Zink and numerous other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and 11 siblings.

We are so thankful and privileged to be able to call Lyle a dear friend for over 20 years. I'm happy he is relieved and gone to the big ranch in the sky. Thank you, Lyle Short, for being the kind and sincere friend to us. Anita will probably greet you there with open arms. My sympathy to the whole Short family.
