John Wegher Obituary

Jack was born December 21, 1929 in Walsenberg, Colorado. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family on July 24, 2015. His parents were Charles and Lucille Wegher and he was the younger of two boys. The family moved to Durango in December of 1941, where his father worked at the Safeway located at 11th and Main. His father later opened his own grocery store, Wegher's Food Store, with his brother Johnnie, which was located at College Drive and 5th Avenue. Jack worked as a butcher there on his weekends off. Jack attended Durango High School and was a member of the only Durango basketball team to win the State Championship in 1947. After graduation, he attended The University of Idaho on a basketball scholarship where he pledged Sigma Nu Fraternity. He met Patricia Lynne Williamson from Palouse, Washington while in college. They married in 1951 and Jack entered the United States Air Force and was attached to the Strategic Air Command as a photo radar intelligence officer with a B-52 wing during the Korean War. Three months after being released from the military he enrolled in graduate school to study Counseling. On their way to Nevada for a position, they stopped in Durango to see his parents and Jack was offered a temporary teaching position with School District 9-R. One year turned into 30 and five children were born and raised in Durango. While working for the School District, Jack taught extension courses for Colorado University and Adams State College. In the 1960's Jack was appointed as a United States Air Force Academy Liaison Officer. He represented the Academy through-out the Fourth Congressional District, visiting high schools and universities with programs for potential applicants. He held numerous positions with the School District, finally landing at Riverview Elementary as the Principal, where he spent 20 years. Jack and his brother Bob formed a jazz band and played in various locations throughout the Durango area over the years; most recognizable was the now closed Golden Horseshoe. Both Jack and Bob were members of The Durango Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps. Jack retired from the School District In 1987 after thirty years. Pat died in 1993 and Jack began spending winters in Sun City, Arizona, where he played golf with friends and got out of the snow. He also started traveling to visit his children.

Jack was a member of the Elks, St. Columba Catholic Church, Sigma Nu Alumni, and Hillcrest golf course. He enjoyed his travels, playing golf with his friends, loved his family, walked every day, and had a soft spot for animals, most recently his beloved Tinker.

Jack is survived by his children, Kathy Lynne Kirk (Durango), Kristy Pat Rodri (Michael- Cortez), Robert John Wegher (Joyce- Prescott Arizona), Karen Lucille Nichols (Keyvan- Durango), and David Charles Wegher, (Durango). He is also survived by his brother Robert Charles Wegher, of California, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at St. Columba's Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2015. A reception will be held immediately following the mass at the Parish Center. For those wishing to attend the Rosary, it will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Columba. Cremation has occurred. Private family internment will be held at a later time.

Condolences to his family. I loved Mr. Wegher so very much. He was my elementary school principal, and a life-long friend of my father, Al Haas. I absolutely adored Jack as my school principal, and loved seeing him over the years at the Elks Club and when I would go to mass with my father. Please know that your father made a tremendous impact upon many, many lives and will not be forgotten.

I attended Riverview Elemntary (70-75) and remember your dad. He was a giant to a little first grader, I can remember one time, he called me into his office, with this booming voice that scared me. (I think he liked to do that to keep us in line). I remember him chatting with me. He always called the kids by name. He held those teachers to a high standard, I am thankful he was my princpal. I am sorry for your loss, I pray God gives you comfort during this time. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
