John A. Marvel, president of Adams State College in Alamosa from 1966 to 1977, passed away on July 28.
After leading Adams State, Dr. Marvel went on to become president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities and the president of the state colleges and universities consortium in Colorado.
He was a proponent of cross cultural exchanges, collaborative decision making and personalized education, and he consulted nationally on educational issues.
He had graduate degrees from Denver University and the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Marvel was born March 13, 1922 in Forgan, in the Oklahoma panhandle, where his parents held various jobs during the dustbowl.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was predeceased by his wife Frances, in 2013. They married in 1945.
Dr. Marvel was the father of former First National Bank of Durango president John Marvel, now of Pueblo. John Marvel served as bank president between 1987 and 2000. He was also president of the Durango Chamber of Commerce during that time.
A daughter Merrill Martin and a son Kim Marvel also survive.
A service and reception are Friday, Aug. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Alamosa.

Rest in Peace Dr. Marvel...you were loved by the Hatfield Family...Jim; art professor at ASC, wife Marguerite, daughters, Nancy Christensen, Susan (Wenger) Ham & Judy Blair ! You were a special person in my success to obtain a college degree, from Adams State College!
