Fred Velasquez Obituary

Fred Antonio Velasquez August 14, 1924 - November 18, 2016 made his transition to heaven at the age of 92. He was born to Maria and Francisco Velasquez in Silverton Colorado. He is one of 10 children raised farming in the Durango/Arboles area. He was a very devout catholic. He met and married the love of his life Isidora "Dee" Gomez in 1951. After they married they moved to Grand Junction in 1952 where they raised five children of their own while also taking in two nieces needing their support and guidance. As devout Catholics, family was very important to Fred and Dee, they would enjoy loading up the car or camper and taking the family to see their extended family, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in laws throughout Colorado and Utah. Fred loved the outdoors, as was evident by his early career as a sheepherder and hunting in the Grand Valley area. He later worked at St. Mary's for many years. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing with his friends. His neighbors say that he was always there to lend a hand and enjoyed his company. Fred moved back to Durango, Colorado in 1984 where he retired and spent time with his Durango family and friends.

He is survived by sons, Fred Velasquez jr. of Grand Junction (Rosa-Marie); Mick Velasquez of Novato, California (Kevin); and daughters, Doddie Abeyta of Durango, CO (John); Dr. Norma Velasquez-Brant of Reno, NV (Dan); Patty Moore of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His sister Vivian Archuleta of Durango, CO (Jake). His youngest son Frank Velasquez, Farmington, NM, precedes him in death.

Grandchildren, Brain Henderson of Buffalo, NY (Darcie); Brenna Abeyta-Watson of Durango, CO (Rob); Michelle Henderson-Aranda of Ft. Collins, CO (Victor); Anthony Velasquez of Orlando, FL (Vivian); Robert Mason and Shalana Mason of Farmington, NM; Jessie Moore of Colorado Springs, CO; Destiny Moore Hollywood of FL; as well as many wonderful great-grand kids.

A memorial service will be held in Durango Colorado at a later date. Family and friends will gather in Spring 2017 for a celebration of Fred's life.

In lieu of flowers donation can be made to Hospice.
