Frank Thomas Kalani Powell of Ignacio passed peacefully at home surrounded by family, May 4th, 2015.
Frank was born June 20th, 1954 in Sunnyside, UT, to Frank Powell and Marjorie McKeague. He grew up in Hawaii and graduated from Waianae High School in 1972. Starting at an early age, Frank took interests in mechanics and racing. Frank was married to Brenda (Soares) on October 20, 1973 in Honolulu, HI. He, his wife and two children moved to Durango, Colorado, in 1980. Frank worked for Pat Murphy Motors, the City of Durango, and Tri-Star Construction for a short time before he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005.
Frank's passion was racing and wrenching on cars. Although, he focused on dirt-track racing, there were no auto sports he didn't attempt. He was a self-proclaimed "tinkerer" and machinist. There was no problem he couldn't fix. He took great pride in his close-knit family and friends, but most of all, his four grandchildren. Family was his true passion.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years: Brenda Powell, children: Dian (Aaron) Gallero, Frank (Lilley) Powell, Jr., grandchildren: Katelyn, Trevor, Matthew and Abbigayle, siblings: Elaine Nalani (George, Sr.) Nobriga, Bruce (Shirley) Powell, and Momilani Silva, nephew: George (Elana) Nobriga, Jr., in addition to six other nieces and nephews.
Frank is preceded in death by his parents and sister: Leilani Powell.
A private celebration of Frank's life will be held.
