David John Devine passed away peacefully on July 8, 2017, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, with his family and beloved dog Bruin at his side. David wrote in his high school yearbook that when he went, he was going to bring the hammer, which he did during his eight-month battle with leukemia.
David was born on November 20, 1979, at Maine Medical Center in Portland to John and Lynn Devine. He grew up in Portland on Kenwood Street, where he developed his enormous talent for having fun and causing trouble. He attended Nathan Clifford, King Middle, and Portland High, where he made lifelong friends. Although a true Portlander, David also called Durango, Colorado home for several years.
David lived life on his terms and never lost his sense of humor, irreverence, and stubbornness, even during his final days. David loved music and jamming with his friends, especially his CALAIS band mates. He also loved being outdoors, hiking, skiing, and getting lost in the woods. David was a die-hard Red Sox fan and was at Fenway for many memorable games.
David was deeply loved by his family and the friends he made throughout his life, who are too numerous to name here. During his last few weeks, David was especially grateful for all messages of love and encouragement from friends and family far and wide, which he read with great joy even if he could not respond to them all.
David is survived by his parents, John and Lynn of Portland, his brother Mark and his wife Hannah and daughter Allison of South Portland, brother Mike of Westbrook, brother Peter of Santa Monica, California, his grandmother, Peggy Brophy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, many aunts, uncles and cousins, countless friends, and his dog, Bruin. The family would like to thank the team at Massachusetts General Hospital Lunder 10 who cared for David.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of David's life on Friday, July 14 at Mariner's Church, 368 Fore Street, Portland, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, 217 Landing Rd., Westbrook, ME 04092.

John and family. I was saddened to walk past David's room Saturday on Lunder 10. My heartfelt sympathy. Although I never had the pleasure to meet him, I loved reading about David here and all he enjoyed in life.

So sad to hear the passing of David. My condolences to the family and friends. I knew David from high school and he and his band (Calais) used to play at my bar (Bottomz Up) from 2003 to 2005. It was always a pleasure to read/hear many of David's thoughts/words. The world has lost a wonderful person. Rest in peace Box.
