John Briner , 71, of Durango, CO, died 8/12/2018 Durango, CO . Born 12/8/1946.

An afternoon memorial and celebration will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on Second Avenue with a ceremony at 4:30 p.m.

A service will be held at A celebration of life for John Briner, a former long-time Durango resident, will be on Saturday, Feb. 9. 'Briner,' as his friends affectionately called him, died on Aug. 12 following a short battle with cancer. He was 72. Briner moved to Durango in the late 1960s to attend Fort Lewis College. He worked for years for the Purgatory Ski School, finishing his career there as director. He also worked for many summers on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train. at Briner then spent 20 years in Telluride where he worked for the ski school in winters, and in the summers, he was a conductor and engineer on the White Pass and Yukon Route Narrow Gauge Train in Skagway, Alaska. He later relocated to Skagway full time. His celebration of life will start with a ski day at Purgatory Resort. Participants are asked to meet at the bottom of the Six Pack at 10 a.m. on Saturday..
