Greg Ryder Obituary

We lost Greg Ryder of Durango in an automotive accident on April 23, 2019. Born to Beth and Leon Ryder on Oct. 31, 1951 in Ripon, Wisconsin. His remaining family members are his wife, Julie; his brother, Noel Ryder; and his sister, Susan Ryder; plus a large extended family.

Greg was raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. His early exposure to TV cowboy shows paved the way to his western music career. Family sing-alongs developed his beautiful baritone voice. His father died when Greg was 11, and that experience brought out his compassion for others and his inner strength.

He learned to ski, and was influenced by the great Stein Eriksen's skiing style. He attended Ripon high school, LaCrosse State university, and Illinois State university, where he met the love of his life, Julie Labens. They married in 1974 and moved to Vail, Colorado, and then found their home in Durango.

Everyone has dreams, but few get to achieve all of them. Greg did. A home in the mountains, a beautiful wife, a career in music, and the love and respect of the people of Durango and his fans. He was eternally grateful for all the people who loved him. "... and until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand."

A memorial celebration will be announced in the Durango Herald sometime in late August or early September. Visit his website, gregryder.com, to purchase his CDs and send your comments.

Not sure what to say?

Just got the sad news about my old friend, Greg.
I'll never forget all the times we played darts, knocked back beers and made music together. Those were some happy days.
Julie, I'm so sorry for your trouble, hope to see you soon.

Saddened to hear of Greg's passing. I first met Greg playing darts in Clancy's Pub (it may have been the first Snowdown). He was so easy to get to know, and not only did we enjoy playing darts, but both of us were musicians. My condolences to his family.

Greg was a long-time friend and golfing partner to my husband, Bill Frye. Now they are together on the greens forever. Greg's music was a gift to all who had the privilege of hearing it. - Shirley Fryel

On these rainy days I use Greg's music to sooth my restless dog ..... such a great voice! Now the heavens have a baritone; gone but not forgotten.

Greg has been a part of my life for a number of years. He had a love for people that no one can equal. I will miss my random visits on Main Street and the concerts of love at the lake. God I miss you so! RIP.

I am so sorry to hear this. Greg recorded a song I wrote, a Western song, and did such a beautiful job and was so very gracious a man. Sad heart. Eileen Phillips
