Dorothea Carmack Obituary

Dorothea Wielang Carmack went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 9, 2017 in Florence, Oregon. She was 88 years old.

Dorothea was born in Thompson Park, Mancos, Colorado on December 5, 1928 to Florence (Jones) Sponsel and Frank Sponsel. Born on the family ranch, she was the sixth of nine children. After delivering the first eight, her father decided that was enough and sent her mother to the hospital to give birth to their ninth child.

As a child, Dorothea tucked her dress into her coveralls and rode a horse to the Cherry Creek Schoolhouse. Since there was no high school in the area, she persuaded her dad to let her stay with family in Durango, where she attended Durango High School.

Upon graduation from DHS, she married Anthony Gail Wielang of Durango. During their marriage, Dorothea and Gail adopted three children through Catholic Charities. Their life together took them to Arizona, where they both became employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Job transfers and Gail's employment change to the Bureau of Land Management led them through Utah, Nevada and Oregon, then ultimately to Wyoming, where Dorothea was employed by the Wyoming Highway Department accounting division. Leisure time was spent camping and rock hounding the plains of Wyoming on their mopeds. Gail passed away in November 1984, and a few years later Dorothea retired and returned to her roots In Mancos, Colorado.

She filled her early retirement years enjoying her family in the area, as well as traveling in Europe and homemaking in her little pink house. Over its lifetime, Dorothea's sewing machine logged hundreds of thousands of stitches as she delighted in sewing for her extended family. Dorothea met and later married Jack Carmack of Durango. They enjoyed many years of square dancing, and as she put it, "just plain having fun." Jack passed away in November 2014.

In October 2016, Dorothea moved to Florence, Oregon, so family could help her in an assisted living setting. Her positive demeanor and teasing ways made a lasting impression on those who helped her in the final months of her life. Though she is greatly missed, her family finds peace knowing that she is in the glorious presence of Jesus.

Dorothea is survived by her three children. Linda (Gordon) Daring of Manchester, Connecticut, Carol (Bob) Severy of Florence, Oregon and Mark Wielang of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Additionally she leaves behind five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one "favorite un-daughter-in-law", Ronni Tidwell of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 5 at 10 o'clock at Saint Rita's Catholic Church in Mancos. A potluck buffet will follow in the church hall. Cremation has occurred. Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home.
